Dockers Strike Against Imperialist War
INTERNATIONAL WORKERS LEAGUE (IWL) SECRETARIAT
United States workers are taking an important step in their struggle against the imperialist policies of the Bush administration. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union - the international union of the dockers and warehouse workers - has announced that on May 1st it will organize a strike in the ports on the Eastern coast of the United States to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and in Afghanistan, together with the withdrawal of American troops from the Middle East.
It is the first time in decades that an American union has decided to take action of this sort against the political and military action abroad that is being taken by the Bush administration with the support of the U.S. parliament.
In a letter dated the 22nd of February which was sent to John Sweeney, the leader of the AFL-CIO - the largest American trade union confederation - the leader of the ILWU, Robert McEllrath, informed him that a recent trade union meeting, attended by delegates from every port on the west Coast, decided to "call on port workers to take strike action during the morning shift of May 1st, 2008, to demonstrate their opposition to the war in Iraq".
This resolution is profoundly significant. First, not only does it oppose the war in Iraq (already very unpopular in the USA), but also the occupation and war in Afghanistan (which all the presidential candidates from all parties, like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain want to expand). The motion that was approved also demands the withdrawal of American troops from the entire region. Second, it represents the first step by an important section of the very powerful American working class against the imperialist policies of its government, from inside the very heart of the empire. Third, the action will take place on May 1st, the international day of the workers’ struggle, which, despite the fact that it originated in the United States, the American bourgeoisie has attempted to consign to oblivion. On this same day, the action of the dockers will certainly be combined with that taken at the same time by immigrant workers in the United States.
The International Workers League-Fourth International welcomes and supports this dockers’ strike called by the IWLU. We appeal to other trade unions and to other workers’ organizations in the United States to follow this example. We do this, convinced that the unity of all the workers and the people of the world, those from colonized countries as well as those from imperialist nations, will give them strength in their struggle and will allow them to make progress in the task of defeating the common enemy: the imperialist bourgeoisie.

The International Workers League-Fourth International welcomes and supports this longshoremen’s strike called by the IWLU.
